Planning and executing a themed photoshoot with two toddler boys is no small feat. But it is SO fun. Every once in awhile, I get my box lights and backdrop out, turn on some music, and pray nothing breaks as we run around taking photos. This is what happened yesterday for a Valentine’s Day-themed shoot! The pictures turned out so cute, but I wanted to take you behind the scenes with me to see see how I got these photos!

I don’t think you need fancy props or professional space to take darling photos of your kids. I think what it takes is a little bit of planning and forethought, a vision, and a roll-with-the-flow attitude. Nothing ever quite turns out as I expect– sometimes it’s BETTER, sometimes it’s not at all. But what I am most concerned about it making sure I’m creating an experience for my kids that’s fun and different, so that they will look forward to taking pictures for the rest of their childhood (insert evil genius Muhahaha laugh).

Steps I took to make this shoot happen:

FIRST– I wrote out a list of ideas. It looked a little something like “white backdrop, red balloons, lipstick, a sign maybe? white chair? outfit? hearts” etc… It ended with “Simple is Better” and I think that is the theme I went with.

SECOND– Head to Walmart and spend $10 on cheap props. Balloons, fake glasses, and mustaches etc

THIRD– Set everything up while Emmett naps and Judah plays so we are READY TO GO when he wakes up.

FOURTH– After Emmett woke up, I surprised him with the balloons and junk food (I swear this is the only time that’s allowed) and started snapping those shots!

I hope you enjoy this video and that it inspires you to get creative and have fun taking pictures with your kids! I love how these photos turned out and I will be treasuring them forever.
